Socks are finished!

Wahoo!  I should have made the cuffs a bit tighter but Monte loves them anyhow.  Unfortunately, some cat hair from a friends house got on them and he is allergic to cats.  So they will need some washing first.

My own socks

With Monte up north I decided to work on my own socks.  They were finished in about three days.

Yarn used: Simply Soft, a blue color

Pattern: A simple toe up sock generator found here.

The heel was done using a style found at TessKnits here.  And the short row style found here.

The socks turned out fairly ok though a bit smaller then I wanted.  Either my gauge is smaller then I thought, or it is just because I am on the high end of the pattern size.  Foot size is 9.  The heel had to be taken out the first time, I started too soon!  My first pair of toe up socks, I just could not find anything out there that would give me a good rule of thumb for starting the heel, which by the way is quite roomy.  I used a three strand cable, just not a normal braid style.  The strands have more space between them.

Now the pics!

Hubby needs something to cover his feet while walking on our cold floors.  His socks are too thin and his feet are too big to just go out and buy slippers.  Hell, Big and Tall only go up to size 13!  So I am going to give my hand at toe up socks, hopefully they will be thick enough.

Pattern creation can be found at Indigirl’s site here.

My own project can be found here.

I’m going to use some left over yarn, Caron Simply Soft Autumn Red.  The pattern is toe up, first time for me, hopefully it isn’t too much trouble.  I’m also hopeing to find a nice linear cable pattern for the front and top of the sock.

X-Mas Stockings

Next project in the Teaching Myself to Knit giant project is Christmas Stockings.  I thought that since I have a mantle above a fireplace I have a place for some stockings.  Just not sure if we’re going to fill them or not, lol.  The pattern is this: Ravelry link and Blogger link.

About the socks

I’ve decided not to do the last sock. That project is finished. I did it to learn how to knit socks, and how to knit in general, now I will move on to other projects that I find more enticing. The Hedgerow fingerless gloves. I’m also thinking a sweater maybe in my future as well, but we will see. I have the afghan to finish and that must come first.

I thought about doing the second sock but I really know all that I want to know. Plus, I don’t think I will ever wear them so what is the point? For everyday socks I will just wear store brought. For more fancy look I will probably make my own.

One down…

I finished the first sock. Not certain I’m going to do the second sock. It’s too loose around my ankle. It is tight but doesn’t hold well and feels like it is going to slip down. Perhaps that is my imagination. I like socks that really mold to the feat. I may do the second sock and experiment on it but I may just move on and forget about it. It was just to learn how to knit, not to actually make socks to wear. That comes later.

I’ve made progress on the sock. Just have the foot to finish and that is it, well the toe shaping but that is at the end. Maybe by the end of today? I’ve already looked at some more sock patterns and found one that look nice, and a set of fingerless gloves to match. I’m thinking that I will finish this sock, work on the afghan, do the next sock, work some more on the afghan, and then start on the fingerless gloves. I hope to finish the afghan but we will see how fast that flows along. By myself watching vids I can get a row and half of squares down.
